May 9 is the deadline for National Honors Society and Science National Honors Society applications. The National English Honors Society application is due on May 15.
Honors societies are for students who are showing exemplary work in that subject area. There are many different societies, but the main ones are National Honors Society, Science National Honors Society, National Art Honors, Spanish Honors, Theater Arts, Music, National English Honors Society, Math Honors Society, and Rho Kappa.
Rho Kappa is the social studies honor society. Rho Kappa and Math NHS applications aren’t out until the beginning of next school year.
Chloe Fulk, sophomore, is applying for NHS, NEHS, Rho Kappa, and Math NHS. She has not yet turned in her application for NHS, even though it is due tomorrow.
Fulk said, “It’s around the end of the year, the AP exams and other things are happening. You feel a little overwhelmed with everything.”
Addison Brockman, sophomore, hasn’t submitted hers yet because she is waiting on a required adult confirmation, which she’s not sure is coming.
Without confirmation, she can’t put that activity as a service or leadership role.
Fulk felt that applications should happen during the summer or all at the beginning of the year, so we arent as stressed when applying.
Many students are applying for honors societies because they look good on college applications. Chloe Yates, sophomore, is joining not just for college but to meet new people and help out in the community.
“I’m applying for these to build my academic resume, and because I feel like it would be a good experience, and getting to know new people. And I want to help out,” said Yates.
There is some stress around the application process, because only the best of the best students get in.
Brockman is anxious about not getting accepted, even though she demonstrates all pillars of NHS, and most applicants don’t have the leadership roles to get in.
When asked what she was most worried about, Brockman said, “Getting in. I think I meet the requirements, but I’m still worried about not getting in.”
Even though this is a very stressful time, students are still trying their best to get everything done.
