With Leesville’s prom quickly approaching, prom plans are a topic for everyone’s conversation. Choosing a dress, where to eat, and where to take pictures. Now people have also been debating whether to carry a bouquet or wear a corsage.
In recent years, more and more students are opting for a flower bouquet instead of a corsage — a collection of flowers worn on the wrist by most girls at prom and other formal events. Corsages are given to signify a level of importance or as a gift of affection.
During prom, everyone is on the move, whether you are dancing, taking pictures, or out to dinner, your corsage is always on your wrist, and you don’t have to worry about leaving it behind.
“I did want to have to carry around a bouquet, and corsage is just more convenient since it’s on your wrist,” said Lucy, junior.
A corsage is often paired with a matching boutonniere for the person’s date. This collection of flowers is pinned to a suit jacket. The tradition is that dates will exchange flowers as a gift for the evening.
“I feel like trends change all the time. I think traditionally everyone went to prom with a date and if you did have a date you did not go. But I feel like now most people just go with their friends, so they opt for bouquets,” said Avery Pederson, junior.
Others prefer a more dramatic and less traditional look, pairing their dress with a matching bouquet. Bouquets are great for pictures because they are larger.
Another reason Bouquet could be appealing to some is that many people enjoy making the bouquets with friends. Picking out flowers and creating a custom bouquet becomes another tradition people look forward to.
“It’s fun to make a bouquet with friends whereas a corsage you have to buy, which can get expensive,” said Killian
Whether you will be showing up to prom with a bouquet in hand or a delicate bracelet with flowers around your wrist, prom still carries years worth of tradition and memories.
