On January 25, 2025, the Leesvilles Road High School Science Olympiad team made history by placing third at the NC Chatham Regional Tournament qualifying for States for the first time in six years.
The Chatham Regional Tournament is an NC State-produced program with many different areas of building and knowledge-based events. The LRHS team participated in 18 events, ranging from Forensics to Air Trajectory.
Stacy Wang, a senior, has been participating in the Science Olympiad for three years, and this will be her first time going to the States. At the tournament, Wang competed in Material Science where she built a cement puck that was tested at the event and took a test on material science which landed her team fourth place in that event.
“I was really excited when the team’s overall score qualified us to go to states… because it has never happened in the past years that I was on the team,” said Wang.
Not only was Wang’s work exceptional, the team scored fourth place for over ten events. Their highest score was in Forensics, which the team placed second in.
The LRHS team placed third below Athens Drive and East Chapel Hill High School. The States tournament takes place from April 25-26 at NC State. States is an amazing opportunity for students in the Science Olympiad to compete, immerse themselves in science education, and have fun through the Parade of Champions.
Now the 15 chosen members of the LRHS team will spend the next two months preparing for the competition which involves studying their event topic and building any necessary projects, and celebrating their success.
