Leesville’s media center is currently undergoing changes such as rearranging furniture, creating more collaborative spaces for students, and adding more improvements.
These new changes include \new furniture like tables, seating, and a new circulation desk for the staff. The circulation desk serves as a way for students to check out books, ask for help looking for a book, or ask any questions they may have about the media center. Along with these changes comes a completely new layout to the media center, with the addition of more book displays.
The Wake County Public School System provides what is called a “Life Cycle Refresh Grant” for schools that have been around and in session for a certain number of years, typically 30. “Leesville hit the 30-year mark, and the library basically had not been renovated since it opened in 1993, so that made us eligible for this furniture refresh,” said Heather Fields, staff. Fields is the Media Specialist and Department Chair for the media center here at Leesville.
“I think that there are a lot more pockets of seating that are mobile. We have some cafe-height tables in the corners… we have a section of tables that have writable surfaces on top so students can use dry-erase markers as they’re brainstorming and working on projects,” said Fields.
“Whenever I have Key Club I visit [the media center],” said Kira White, sophomore. “It will give [the students] more secluded space to study,” said White. Key Club uses the media center for their monthly meetings, as do other school clubs and organizations. “I like learning about new worlds… and getting a time to chill and not on my phone,” said White.
Many students enjoy using the media center to study, work on projects, look for a new book to read, and more.
