All About The Earth & Sustainability Club

The Earth & Sustainability Club is a student-led club here at Leesville. The club aims to give underclassmen the opportunity to gain service hours and help the community. The club does many different projects such as trash cleanups, murals (as pictured), school beautification, and more.

Clara Davis and Katie Carrigann started the club during their sophomore year of high school. “We wanted to provide people with a better place to come and get service hours. Lots of service opportunities are more geared towards upperclassmen… but for underclassmen, we realized there wasn’t a whole lot of service available around the school for younger people,” said Clara Davis, senior.

During the previous school year, the Earth & Sustainability Club took part in many projects including a cleanup of the school’s track and parking lot, making bird feeders and animal figures out of pinecones, sorting bottle caps, and so much more.

Isabel Snyder, a member of the club who attended the interest meeting said, “They talked about… how they picked up trash and made projects out of the trash, … [as well as] being creative in ways to help the environment,” said Snyder, sophomore.

“I just make sure that we are [moving] ahead, but the ladies who are running the club. They just do it… it’s all student-driven,” said Sharon Shwinger, staff advisor of the club. “We have done more than just the Leesville community. Two times already we have been to Hillbourn for their beautification day, which was very cool. Community wise for social reasons, it’s a great great club,” she said.

The Earth and Sustainability Club has also done many projects and different activities for holiday events at Leesville such as a booth for the spring carnival and a setup with games and prizes at Leesville’s “Hall-oween” event during the fall.

“I’ve always been super passionate about the environment and preserving it,” said Davis. The next meeting for the Earth & Sustainability Club will meet on Friday, October 11. The club meets the first Friday of every month in room 1201 at 2:30pm.More information on how to join the Earth & Sustainability club can be found on posters around the school, on their TikTok @earthandsustainability, or on their Instagram @lrhsearthclub.
