The Leesville Pride took a big win against the Broughton Capitals this past Tuesday. Leesville ended the game early, with ten runs after five innings, resulting in a 10-0 ball game.

The Pride started off the first inning with earning two runs and an additional three in the second inning making it a 5-0 game. The score remained the same throughout the third inning until Leesville gained another run in the fourth.

The ten after five rule in softball concludes that after five played innings, if the score is 10-0, the game ends and seven innings are no longer played. In the fifth inning, the Pride needed to earn four additional runs in order to end the game early.

Katy Neligon came in clutch.

Coach James had confidence in her to make some change. It was her first at bat of the season, earning a single with a hit to right field. She also crossed the plate, brought in by Savannah Oberdorf, junior, finishing the game.

“When coach called my name to be subbed into the game, I was a little nervous, but I masked that with the motto ‘fake it till you make it’, which Coach often uses. Getting my first hit and being the winning run felt unreal and winning the Pride Player of the game felt great that I could be a valuable asset to the team,” said Neligon.

The Pride relied heavily on Maddie Kelbaugh, a junior who scored three runs and stole a base. Kelbaugh got on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Bryanna Gulliams, sophomore, was another key contributor getting a homerun going 1-3 at the plate.

The Capitals were only able to get two hits off of Leesville’s pitcher, Kayla Wozniak who earned nine strikeouts and not letting any runs score.

This was Broughton’s fourth defeat in a row whereas Leesville continued their three game winning streak.

The Leesville Pride will head out on the road to challenge Broughton again at 4:00pm this Friday April 5, 2024.

Leesville hopes to continue their winning streak as they go 3-3 this conference seeing.
