Every year Google does a Year in Search 2022 on their Google Trends website. It covers all the top searches worldwide, and here are the results.

Top 3 Searches

Wordle (#1)

The web-based word game took the world by storm three years after it came out on May 16, 2018.

“It was a fun little puzzle,” said Makeda Glasgow, senior.

The Wordle of the day constantly trended every day during late 2021 and early 2022. Even though it fell off slightly after it was bought by the New York Times, thousands of people still play it.

India vs. England (#2)

In other parts of the world, the sport cricket is very popular. Therefore, India vs. England trended at #2 in searches.

On November 10, England beat India by 10 points to advance to the T20 World Cup final. England later beat Pakistan to win the whole series.

Ukraine (#3)

This trend, as #3 throughout the year, is not surprising.

The invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February has been the object of interest by everyone. This was one of the first wars in Europe since World War II and impacted the lives of everyone.

As of December 13, the Ukrainians are still fighting hard against the Russians with aid from Western countries.

Top 3 People

Johnny Depp (#1) & Amber Heard (#3)

Johnny Depp & Amber Heard’s defamation court case from April to June 2022 captured the eyes of the world.

“I kept up with all the major news until the case ended,” typed Caroline Phillips, senior, over text.

Depp and Heard were famous actors in their own rights before they divorced, and Heard alleged that Depp abused her.

Depp later sued her for defamation and won $15 million from Heard. Heard launched a countersuit and claimed she could not pay the amount owed.

Will Smith (#2)

Will Smith (#2)

The biggest celebrity drama of the year happened at the Emmys, where Will Smith yelled and slapped Chris Rock for making jokes about Smith’s wife, Jada.

Many thought the altercation was planned, but as soon as Smith put his hands on Rock, everyone knew it was real.

The reactions from the crowd went viral, and the slap is now a meme. “I thought it was funny,” said Glasgow.

2022 was a crazy year for individuals, just like the previous two, but Google Trends shows how connected issues and altercations affect everyone worldwide.
