Leesville Road High School’s Capital Pride team performed in Orlando, Florida in Disney World. Tonya Dickens, chorus director, departed Leesville with her Capital Pride students during third period on Wednesday, March 7, and returned Sunday, March 11.

They received a superior rating in a national adjudication called Festival Disney on March 9 in the Saratoga Springs ballroom. The section of Leesville choir also received second place in the overall Concert Choir category.

The students had to perform in front of judges that consisted of college professors of choral music and respected individuals in the Choral Music field. They performed Bonzorno Madonna by Antonio Scandello, Earth Song by Frank Ticheli, and Battle of Jericho by Moses Hogan.

In addition to Festival Disney, Capital Pride participated in a clinic, working with Dr. Welborn Young, who is the director of Choral activities at UNC Greensboro.

Preparation for the competition consisted of good work ethic in class, attention to minor details in the sound and music, and individually practice outside of class.

“They have really good breath support when they are singing loud, but they need more breath support when they are singing soft,” said Dickens via email.

Next, Capital Pride will be preparing for the spring concert on May 18. The Disney experience will prove to be beneficial to the performance of the students in these events.

“The judges comments and the clinic was really helpful, I think we are all excited to try some of the ideas presented to us. The choir naturally becomes more close on trips like these and because of this shared experience we perform better as a choir,” said Dickens via email.

Congratulations to Capital Pride on all of your hard work and accomplishments in Disney. Leesville looks forward to seeing how Disney has changed your performances.
