Tryouts for men’s and women’s basketball started Monday, October 31. At 2:30 p.m., tryouts for women’s basketball went first in the main and auxiliary gyms. Men’s tryouts followed at 4:30, tryouts for the men’s basketball team started.
Thirty-three girls tried out for the women’s basketball team this year. They were then separated into two groups, one in the main gym and the other in the auxiliary gym.
“We try to get as many girls as we can to participate in tryouts. We’re watching for girls who will show us the dedication and commitment that we’re looking for in players. That’s one of the first things I look for in a player, along with attitude and leadership skills,” said Ben Daniels, head coach of the women’s basketball team.
The women’s basketball tryouts usually consist of basic drills and scrimmages. It shows the coaches where players are in terms of skill level, physical condition and basketball comprehension.
Tryouts for the men’s basketball team were similar to the women’s. Approximately fifty boys showed up for tryouts and were then separated into two different groups.
The men’s basketball tryouts consisted of more scrimmages and fewer drills.
“During tryouts, I usually look for what the boys can do skill wise and how they react under pressure. We do drills, but I prefer to see what they can do in a game before I make a final decision,” said Jonathan Frazier, head coach of the men’s basketball team.
Tryouts for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams ended on Wednesday, November 2. Leesville now has its men and women’s basketball team for the 2016-2017 season. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams are set to be at Panther Creek on Thursday, November 17.
