Several students congregated in Ms. White’s classroom during SMART Lunch B on Thursday, October 22, for the inaugural meeting of the Creative Writing Club. Creative Writing is currently the newest club on campus.

The club has been in the making for a while. During second semester of last year, some of Ms. White’s students approached her with interest in a creative writing club. “… Initially when [the students] turned the paperwork in, it was too late to start a club, so we put it off until this year,” explained Ms. White, the advisor, “so this year I orchestrated it.”

Students will meet to compose and share original writing pieces. A volunteer project will also be undertaken during the course of the year.

Due to the later start, the club’s leadership positions have yet to be filled. Members of the club will vote to elect their officers in the upcoming meetings. Positions include an Editor, Vice President, Secretary, Publicity Chair, Volunteer Chair, and possibly a Treasurer.

“I see the club going in several directions,” White said. She explained that it should be “a way for students to collaborate with each other with their own writing, but also to share some sort of writing project with the community…something that they’re going beyond themselves to share their writing.”

She added that the club may be the forerunner to a literary magazine of some kind that would begin in the 2016-17 school year.

Creative Writing Club will meet again on the next two Thursdays, October 29 and November 5, and new members are welcome. However, the standard meeting time will be on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month during SMART Lunch B.
