Dancing on the basketball court

The Leesville Dance Ensemble strikes their end pose as they finish another spectacular performance at the varsity men’s basketball game. Dance Ensemble is now preparing for another basketball game performance and two spring performances.

Between their Homecoming performance and winter concert, the Leesville Dance Ensemble has spent the past few weeks working hard to prepare for their most recent performance at the varsity men’s basketball game.

This past Tuesday, January 27, the Leesville Dance Ensemble put on a spectacular show during halftime of the varsity men’s basketball game against Broughton.

If there were any nerves before or during the performance, it didn’t show. The Dance Ensemble owned the floor as they performed a mix of modern, trendy dances such as the nae nae and whip, along with more traditional dance styles such as jazz and ballet.

Their halftime performance during a basketball game is a tradition for the Leesville Dance Ensemble.

“We feel as [though] DE is not given enough credit. Rather than taken as a sport, we are taken as a club. Performing at basketball games gives us a chance to show that we’re not just a class: we’re a team,” said Destini Darden, a sophomore on Dance Ensemble.

After the members of Dance Ensemble stepped off the court, out of breath and smiling with pride, the Loonies cheered on their friends and the members of Dance Ensemble enjoyed the rest of the basketball game which ended in a victory for the pride. However, the Dance Ensemble’s hard work didn’t stop there.

“Considering DE is a class, we practice everyday. We worked with some DE alumni who not only helped with formations and timing, but they choreographed the dance,” said Darden.

The Leesville Dance Ensemble is making preparations for the 2015-2016 school year. Auditions will be held February 23 in the black box and are open to anyone wishing to join Dance Ensemble for the next school year.
