From Monday, October 17 through Friday, October 21, the Social Studies Department at Leesville organized and started the “Give Soldiers a Treat” fundraiser, which sent non-perishable foods and other goods to US troops overseas in Afghanistan.
The program is meant to collect items such as non-perishable foods and hygiene products, as well as old magazines and books. Mrs. Eastman, the head of Leesville’s Social Studies Department, led the effort.
“A department member has a family member in Afghanistan, so we sort of adopted the unit,” said Eastman. The department has received a large amount of help from individual students and clubs.
“Political Club, DECA and Model UN have all been very helpful. Señor Ross’s classes have contributed as well.”
Thomas McDonough, senior and member of Political Club, said, “We just wanted to help out because we felt it was a good cause. Soldiers are over in Afghanistan risking their lives for our freedom, it is not that much to ask.”
“It all went really well,” said Eastman. She also mentioned that the turnout of donating students was excellent.
“We have really gotten a lot of help; it is just great.”
The department chose items such as magazines and books for specific reasons. “We wanted the soldiers to get a little care package of items from home,” said Eastman.
