The swimming and diving team has been living up to last year’s high standards. They were undefeated last year and since the season started in November, the boy’s team has had three wins and one loss, which was a second place. The girl’s team has also had three wins and one loss (second place).
The members work hard and enjoy succeeding together. Looking forward to a meet with friends is part of what keeps the team going.
“Just seeing everyone together… everyone’s doing their best and encouraging each other,” said Allison Werk, a junior and one of the four swim team captains
The diving team has been doing well, too. Brian Campoli has placed first at both diving meets, and Cooper Paiva has placed 6th and 8th, respectively.
The meets, what a swimming match is called, can run fairly long. It is easy to miss the matches, which are called events. “You have to pay attention so you don’t miss your event,” said Werk. But with the team racking up wins, this does not appear to be a major problem.
The swimming and diving teams meet at TAC, Triangle Aquatics Center, in Cary which is where they have their home meets. Both teams practice at Optimist. Non-year round members must practice from 5:15 a.m. everyday, but year round members practice only on certain days.
“Both teams have done an excellent job this year. We lost 12 seniors, but every new season comes with new great swimmers! I am very proud of all the members of the swimming and diving team and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season,” said Ms. Bunch, the swimming and diving coach.
The swimming and diving team’s seasons will end with a conference meet in January and regionals in February.
