We are introduced to Emma and Charlie at the beginning of the film when Charlie attempts to approach Emma at a coffee shop. He stumbles when Emma seems to be ignoring her, before he learns she’s deaf in one ear and that she genuinely didn’t hear him. Emma then prompts Charlie to try his approach again, and the pair hit it off.
Rom-com vibes? Check. Character chemistry? Immaculate. Dark, psychological twist? Coming right up.
Things take a turn for the worse when Emma and Charlie are at dinner with their married friends, Rachel and Mike. They all sample a little too much wine and play a “game” where they tell each other the worst thing they’ve ever done.
Mike goes first, saying he once used an ex-girlfriend as a human shield when attacked by a stray dog. Rachel follows, telling everyone she locked her “slow” neighbor in an abandoned RV closet as a child. Charlie goes third, sharing that he once cyberbullied a classmate so badly that the classmate moved schools.
The real twist comes with Emma’s story: when she was 15, she planned to commit a school shooting while struggling with depression, but ended up not going through with it. At some point in practicing shooting, she held the rifle too close to her ear and permanently damaged it, explaining why she’s half deaf.
We later learn that Emma eventually joined an anti-gun activist group and has since moved far past that dark time, but the doubt has already taken hold. For most of the rest of the movie, Charlie becomes increasingly more paranoid about Emma’s mental state, to the point that Charlie almost has a psychotic break.
The wedding still happens, albeit with lots of drama. The film ends with a battered Emma and Charlie sitting in a diner, reintroducing themselves as if meeting for the first time, and “starting over.”
My first feeling once the credits rolled was overwhelmed. The movie covered a lot of plot in a relatively short timespan (The Drama has a runtime of about 104 minutes, or 1 hour and 47 minutes), and I sometimes felt I couldn’t digest all the information I was being given.
That being said, I was impressed with how the directors handled the plot. Mass shootings and gun violence have become common occurrences in the U.S., so much so that citizens have become desensitized to it. The Drama brings this issue back to the front of people’s minds, but from a different angle.
Media–of any form–tends to focus on the victims of shootings. The Drama chose to focus on the would-be perpetrator: Emma. The film explores the situations that led her to plan a shooting, the circumstances that changed her mind, and her journey out of that dark time period. The Emma we see throughout the movie has reformed and moved past that point in her life and has emerged as a stable person.
However, the movie also serves as a cautionary tale for assumptions and obsession. Charlie specifically hyperfixates on Emma’s past, creating what I feel is most of the drama in the story. He immediately starts eliminating any gun or shooting imagery from their house, causing unnecessary tension.
This hyperfixation eventually culminates in Charlie having a nervous breakdown and an impromptu tryst with his coworker, which was ultimately what blew up Charlie and Emma’s wedding reception.
Moving away from the depth of the plot, The Drama soundly delivers in terms of aesthetics. A24 Films LLC is known for creating “arthouse” films; arthouse films are typically more concerned with aesthetics and bringing light to unconventional topics rather than mass profit.
As someone with limited knowledge of how movies are created, even I could appreciate the lighting, costuming, and sets of the movie. It all flowed together nicely and made The Drama extra visually appealing.
The Drama is certainly dramatic, but it’s poignant too. I found the movie intriguing, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a refreshing story.

It makes my day better when I listen to a good playlist.
